The various insurrections in Germany and what can be called the near-revolution there after the end of World War One, then the Great Depression and the General Strike in Britain, along with other class-based conflicts, all seemed to point to class and labour politics being the central political divide, with Russia always looming in the background as the possible future.

At one level, they may demand changes from existing social institutions and thereby accept, in some sense, the legitimacy of those institutions, while at another level, they may seek the entire reconstruction of social systems. Transgression in this complex and multiple way separates activism from activism!. Transgression helps to distinguish movements that make the future in the image of the present from movements that create visions of a different future.
